This year during Rīga City Festival, alongside other events, residents and visitors to the city will be able to enjoy a variety of concerts, many of which will have free entry on presenting a special ticket or by registering in advance; information about this is available at www.rigassvetki.lv.
This year, in contrast with other years, when the central point of the festival was the main bank of the River Daugava, there will be many concerts marking Rīga’s birthday in the suburbs of the city. Festivalgoers will hear “Rīga retro” street music in Sarkandaugava, in Jugla by Lake Velnezers, in Imanta and on the promenade of Ķengarags. The concert cycle “The boat glistens on the water” will take place in Arkādijas Park, Ziedoņdārzs Park and the beach at Ķīpsala, featuring well-known singers and musicians with tunes about the history of the areas.
Concerts featuring new talents will take place in Āgenskalns Market, Kalnciema Quarter and the courtyard of Rīga Dome Choir School. Well-known soloists and musicians will perform at Mazjumprava Manor, in Jugla near the Strazdumuiža Stadium, by Māra’s Lake and in the courtyard of high-rise apartment blocks in Purvciems. Concerts will be performed on floating stages along the length of the city’s canal. Marking a significant anniversary, the 50th Season of the Open Air Museum’s Annual Market -Travelling Open Air Party will take place during Rīga City Festival, accompanied by Dixieland music.
Festivalgoers will be able to enjoy the sounds of music in the parks and squares of Rīga. In Town Hall Square, the orchestra “Rīga” will provide positive vibes and a festival atmosphere, performing well-known and popular tunes for visitors in Old Town. Musical soirées performing music from the “Rīga Jūrmala” festival will be held in Kronvalda Park. In Vērmanes Garden Park, the concert “A walk through melodies” will feature academic as well as world popular music themes and jazz melodies, while musicians, groups and ensembles from different generations will perform in the concert “Song bridges from heart to heart”.
During the festival, concerts will also take place in culture centres and churches. Early music concerts in the cycle “A musical journey to ancient Rīga” will be performed in The Small Guild, while the sounds of jazz will be heard in VEF Culture Palace. Organ music concerts will be played in Rīga Dome Cathedral, as well as popular music performed by well-loved and familiar musicians and soloists, whose tunes will tell the story of Rīga’s history. Fans of choral music will enjoy the concert “I. Love. Rīga.” in St. Peter’s Church.
In order to allow a greater number of people to hear the festival concerts, featuring musicians and soloists from Latvia and abroad, the concerts from Rīga Doma Dārzs, The Small Guild and St. Peter’s Church will be aired on the big screen in Dome Square.
