On the second day of Riga City Festival, August 17th, Riga’s residents and city guests are invited to visit a wide variety of events at Riga’s parks and squares, both in the city centre and the surroundings, to enjoy food from the best restaurants, participate in sports activities, watch performances by the clown group from Prague together with children, shop at festival’s fairs and go see the culminating event of the festival – “City Legends. Meeting of the Legends” at 11. novembra krastmala and watch fireworks at the end of the evening.
Traditionally one of the festival’s locations is Vērmanes Garden and this year the event “Garden of Fairy Tales” will reside there. There will be performances by theatre troupes and puppet theatre shows, and street circus artists Mr. Banana from Germany and Horn man from Belgium, as well as the clown group Squadra Sua from the Czech Republic will show off their skills there. Diverse creative workshops and entertainments will take place on the lawns of the park, but in the evening there will be a jazz music concert.
The culmination of the Festival always takes place at 11. novembra krastmala, where this year, on August 17th everyone is welcome for the event “City Legends. Meeting of the Legends”. There visitors will be able to get to know the most popular of Riga’s legends and fantastic stories and local popular music groups will help tell them. In the evening listeners are invited to the concert “Student Legends of a City”, but at its conclusion everyone will be able to enjoy the festival’s fireworks performance.
The opening of the new cultural and entertainment centre Hanzas Perons in Riga is like a gift to all of Riga’s residents and city guests for the celebration. Everyone interested can go see the newly opened space and, in the evening, they can listen to the concert “From Wagner to Pauls. Riga’s Legends in Music” with participation by orchestra “Rīga” and soloists Beāte Zviedre, Ieva Parša, Daumants Kalniņš and Emīls Kivlenieks. Conductor: Valdis Butāns.
Families with children are welcome at Dome Cathedral, where children under the tutelage of skilled craftsmen will paint, create stained glass panels, try out different musical instruments and create clothes and jewellery. An interesting programme has been prepared for the event “Latvian Horses Before and Now” in Uzvaras Park. Children are also welcome at the informatively entertaining event in the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, as well as at the puppet theatre performances at the culture-spaces “Strops” in Pļavnieki and Ziepniekkalns. Visitors will be able to explore Riga’s legends at the event “The Twists and Turns of Riga’s History along Klostera Street”, where they will have the opportunity to go to a peculiar medieval fair, visit a church tower and go down to church cellars, meet fairy tale characters, take pictures and participate in various competitions.
On Saturday, it will be possible to feel the atmosphere of celebration at the Riga City Festival’s Restaurant in Spīķeri, at Latgales Day in Neatkarības Square, at craftsmen’s fair “A Piece of Latvia. Latvian Legends” and at Bread Street in Esplanāde, at craftsmen’s fair at 11. novembra krastmala and at Book Street in Vērmanes Garden. On the second day of the Festival, visitors will be able to enjoy a series of concerts – “Renaissance Reverence for Riga” at the culture centre Mazā Ģilde, “Musical Legends of Old Riga” in St. Mary Magdalene's Church of Riga, as well as at events such as “Riga Rumbles” in Bastejkalns and “The Voice of Māras Lake. Legends” by Māras Pond, and in Station Square on Origo Summer Stage.
At the Riga City Festival there will be several sports activities, everyone will have the opportunity to both participate in them and be active supporters. This year, the 24-hour Basketball Tournament “Battle of the Riverbanks” will celebrate its 10th anniversary, but for the first time there will be Beach Games in which people will be able to test their athletic abilities in different sports. Those interested in aviation sport will be welcome at the Aviation celebration taking place in Spilve Aerodrome territory.
As every year, during the Riga City Festival there will also be the Freeport of Riga Festival, its events will take place at Kronvalda Park by the canal and next to the Freeport of Riga Authority building. In addition to the traditional events of the Freeport of Riga Festival, this year visitors are also invited to the SUP Festival “SUPiāde 2019” during which along with different competitions and demonstrations it will be possible to watch water lights show “The Story of Water in the Moonlight”
