This year the Riga City Festival will be dedicated to Riga’s legends because legends and history flow throughout the streets of Old Riga and its historical buildings, miraculously coming back to life every time Riga celebrates. Everyone is welcome to participate in the celebration of the Riga City Festival, which will take place from August 16th to 18th and during which visitors will be able to explore the city’s legends, stories and tales, learn about the rich history of the capital and enjoy the diverse programme of cultural and sports activities.
Visitors are welcome to come see the world of legends already on the evening of August 16th in the Dome Square, where history and nowadays will come together in music at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music 100th anniversary season’s opening concert.
Following that, visitors will have the opportunity to hear historical stories and meet legendary personalities for two days at the festival’s locations – at
11. novembra krastmala and Vērmanes Garden, as well as visit events at the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, cinema “Splendid Palace”, newly opened culture and entertainment centre “Hanzas Perons” and in other places of the city.
There will also be performances by German and Dutch street circus artists, shows by the clown troupe “Squadra Sua” from Prague, as well as a performance called “Songs of the Land” by the circus troupe FOCA from the faraway Taiwan.
As every year, the residents and city guests will have a chance to participate in the activities organized by the Freeport of Riga Festival – the 24-hour Basketball Tournament “Battle of the Riverbanks”, Street Music Day and in other traditional events beloved by the people. This year, the festival will introduce a new event – Freeport of Riga SUP Festival with demonstrations and Latvian SUP Sprint Championship. Visitors will be able to watch the fountain show “The Story of Water in the Moonlight”.
Those who support active lifestyle are invited to take part in the Beach Games that will take place in Lucavsala Recreational Park and Ķīpsala Beach. During the Games everyone will be able to try their hand at about 20 different sports.
Festival visitors are also welcome in Pārdaugava, in aerodrome Spilve, where the already customary aviation celebration “Riga Fly-in 2019” will be organized. This year it will include aviation, drone and parachutist demonstrations, the opportunity to learn more about the history of Latvian aviation – its personalities, stories and accomplishments, as well as to see an exhibition of aviation equipment.
On the days of the Riga City Festival, on August 17th and 18th, the public transport will be free of charge.
Riga City Festival is organized by Riga City Council in cooperation with the Freeport of Riga Authority and the Riga Tourism Development Bureau. This event is planned by the Education, Culture and Sports Department of the Riga City Council together with event organizers — companies and public organizations.
