On the second day of Riga City Festival — a wide variety of cultural and sports events, the Grand Concert “Good Evening, Riga! Good Evening, Latvia!” and celebratory fireworks


On the second day of the Riga City Festival, on August 18th Riga’s inhabitants and city guests are invited to visit a diverse range of events in Riga’s parks and squares both in the city centre and the neighbourhoods, to enjoy the menus of the best restaurants, to engage in sports activities, to watch together with children performances by street circus artists, to shop in festival’s fairs, as well as go to the festival’s culminating event “To Riga!” at 11. novembra krastmala and to watch the celebratory fireworks at the conclusion of the evening.

An extensive celebration programme awaits visitors at Vērmanes Garden Park where this year during the festival Riga Latvian Society’s 150th Anniversary will be celebrated. The event “Dream Garden. Riga Latvian Society — 150th Anniversary” will remind everyone about older and more recent pages of history, allowing visitors to feel the atmosphere of the turn of the 20th century. There will be several concerts, poetry readings, artistically creative activities and activities for children.

On Saturday, August 18th, Riga on its 817th birthday invites everyone to attend the event “To Riga!” that will take place at 11. novembra krastmala, expecting relatives, friends and neighbours to arrive from nearby and faraway places. The venue will be designed as an airport, allowing visitors to look into the mysterious daily routine of the International Airport “Rīga”, which is usually invisible to the travellers, to watch the parade of the airport’s equipment and to enjoy performances by local and foreign musicians. The Grand Concert “Good Evening, Riga! Good Evening, Latvia!” will begin at 21:00 at 11. novembra krastmala. Its concept is based on the Third Awakening in Latvia. The Concert programme is made up of songs that were popular during the Awakening, songs that are important regarding the fate of the Baltic States, songs for all the participants from the Baltic States to sing together, as well as songs with a view to the future. At the conclusion of the event everyone is invited to watch the fireworks.

Families with children are particularly welcome at a number of events. Those who are fascinated by circus should go to 11. novembra krastmala and watch performances by Street theatre “V.O.S.A. Theatre” from Prague — Riga’s friendship city, and also to Jaņa Rozentāla Square where there will be performances by dance company HURyCAN, clown Murmuyo from Spain and contemporary circus company Soon Company from Sweden. But those who would like to join in themselves can participate in the event “Let’s colour Riga!” at Bastejkalns next to the City Canal. There together with artists everyone will have chance to turn their ideas into artwork. Children are invited to the Riga Dome, where under the tutelage of skilled experts children will paint, create stained glass panels, clay mouldings, try out different musical instruments, create clothes and jewellery and will try to find out Dome Cathedral’s secrets on the Adventure Trails. As part of the Riga City Festival an interesting programme for families with children will also be prepared at Uzvaras Park at the event “Latvian Horses Then and Now”. Children are also invited to entertaining and educational events in Latvian War Museum and Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation. Children who would like to participate in sports activities can go to Lucavsala on Saturday where they will have the opportunity to try their hand at various athletics disciplines.

On Saturday city visitors will be able to feel the festive mood in the Riga City Festival Restaurant at Spīķeri, at the concert “Musical scenes from Old Riga” in St. Peter's Church, at the concert “Sounds of Centenary” in VEF Culture Palace, at the event “The Voice of Māras Lake” by Māras Pond, at the Station Square next to the Origo Summer Stage, at the festival’s fairs in Jēkaba Square, at Esplanāde Park, at Reformācijas Square in which the Talllinn’s medieval market will take place, at the park of the Culture Palace “Ziemeļblāzma”, at airport “Spilve” and at a number of other locations.

Riga City Festival will host several sports events; their visitors will have a chance to be active supporters and also participants. These events include Daugava Open Water Swimming Cup, International Floorball Tournament “Unihoc Riga Cup 2018”, Lucavsala Beach Volleyball Cup, The Great xRace Riga Adventure 2018, Novuss Cup for Amateurs, Riga Fly-in 2018, Canal Regatta 2018 — Freeport of Riga Cup, 24-Hour Basketball Tournament “IX Battle of the Riverbanks”, “Kinder Volley Fest 2018” and European Volleyball Championship qualification. “Battle of the century — Latvia : Estonia”.

As every year during the Riga City Festival, there will be the Port Festival with events taking place in Kronvalda Park on the shore of the City Canal and next to the Freeport of Riga Authority building. Along with the usual events of the Port Festival, this year everyone is invited to watch the musical show of fountains and water lights called “The Story of Water in the Moonlight” and visit the educational and entertaining interactive installation “Aquatorium”.
