Yacht ”Lietuva”- the symbol of Lithuania’s independence - visits Riga during the City Festival


To commemorate the Centennial of the Independence of Lithuania there will be a possibility to visit the legendary sailing yacht “Lietuva” in the Riga City Yacht Club in Ķīpsala during the Riga City Festival on August 17-19. The yacht is the unofficial symbol of independence visiting ports of the Baltic countries celebrating historical anniversaries of their independence. This summer yacht “Lietuva” dressed in the centennial sail visited Gdansk, Tallinn and is finishing the route in Riga. The yacht crew consists of 5 professional sailors, 5 sailing beginners and the crew is complemented by 19 volunteer cadets, which change in the ports attended.

The visitors will see an exhibition dedicated to the history of Lithuania's independence the yacht carries along. The material is prepared by the Institute of Baltic Region History and Archaeology of the Klaipėda University and the History Museum of Lithuania Minor (Mažosios Lietuvos istorijos musiejus). The visitors will have a possibility to send anniversary greetings on the 100th anniversary of Lithuania to be delivered by sea-mail onboard the yacht to Klaipeda.

Yacht “Lietuva” will welcome the visitors on Saturday, August 18, and Sunday, August 19, at 13:00 – 15:00 and 16:00 – 21:00 at the pier of City Yacht Club in Ķīpsala, Balasta dambis.

The sailing trip of yacht “Lietuva” is organised by the Klaipėda City Municipality and Public Establishment “Klaipėdos šventės” in the framework of project “The Lithuanian Century-Old Odyssey”.
