Riga City Festival 2018 — Riga’s 817th birthday — this year was celebrated commemorating Latvia’s Centenary and the 150th anniversary of Riga Latvian Society, friends, relatives and neighbours were invited to city’s parks and squares, to sport and culture centres to celebrate. Festival was attended by more than 230 000 people — Riga’s inhabitants, city guests from Latvia’s regions and tourists from foreign countries.

On the third day of Riga City Festival, on August 19th, visitors will be able to observe performances by the participants of the 4th Baltic Drum Summit, spend time at Piens Festival, listen to several concert programmes, participate in sports activities and dance in an open-air ball, as well as watch street circus, participate in plain-air painting and shop at fairs.

On the second day of the Riga City Festival, on August 18th Riga’s inhabitants and city guests are invited to visit a diverse range of events in Riga’s parks and squares both in the city centre and the neighbourhoods, to enjoy the menus of the best restaurants, to engage in sports activities, to watch together with children performances by street circus artists, to shop in festival’s fairs, as well as go to the festival’s culminating event “To Riga!” at 11. novembra krastmala and to watch the celebratory fireworks at the conclusion of the evening.

On Friday, August 17th Riga City Festival 2018 — the celebration of the city’s 817th birthday — will begin with the concert “Era and Music” at Vērmanes Garden Park and the evening of songs by Imants Kalniņš at Grīziņkalns, the concert cycle “Song Bridges” and the light show “The Story of Water in the Moonlight”. During the three days of celebration Riga’s inhabitants and city guests are invited to visit the diverse programme of events at 11. novembra krastmala and Vērmanes Garden Park, in cultural institutions, parks and squares, in the city centre and the neighbourhoods.

To commemorate the Centennial of the Independence of Lithuania there will be a possibility to visit the legendary sailing yacht “Lietuva” in the Riga City Yacht Club in Ķīpsala during the Riga City Festival on August 17-19. The yacht is the unofficial symbol of independence visiting ports of the Baltic countries celebrating historical anniversaries of their independence. This summer yacht “Lietuva” dressed in the centennial sail visited Gdansk, Tallinn and is finishing the route in Riga. The yacht crew consists of 5 professional sailors, 5 sailing beginners and the crew is complemented by 19 volunteer cadets, which change in the ports attended.

This Riga City Festival a special significance is given to the Centenary of the Latvian State and to the 150th Anniversary of the Riga Latvian Society, as well as to friends and neighbours. Therefore, there will be an interesting, visually impressive event programme for the celebration in the capital featuring guest artists — friends and neighbours. Artists from Lithuania, Estonia, Chile, the Czech Republic, Taiwan, Spain, Korea and Sweden will come to the Festival.

Baltic Drum Summit is the largest such event in the Northern Europe bringing together more than 300 drummers from different countries. This year it will take place for the fourth time — on Riga’s 817th birthday on August 19th at 11. novembra krastmala — visitors from Latvia and abroad will gather together. The special guests of the event will be professional percussionists from USA, Hungary and Poland.

The Riga City Festival will take place a month from now already — from August 17th to 19th. It is the most anticipated event of the year for many of Riga’s inhabitants and city guests.
