Exhibition of Evidentiary Documents is dedicated to one of the oldest and most cherished parks in Riga – Vērmanes Garden Park. Its creation is associated with tragic events in Riga’s history; 200 years ago, in 1812, when Napoleon’s army had reached Iecava. A state of war was declared due to the fear the incident caused in Riga and it also led to the decision to burn down its suburbs. The enemy never did reach Riga, however, the cost was great, about 7000 city residents lost their home and belongings.
After the war ended in 1814, the city began to rebuild its burned down suburbs. One of the most significant goals was to make the city greener. In 1815 it was decided to reserve a site for and English Park. The city’s foreman Kristians Heinrihs Vērmanis widow Anna Ģertrūde Vērmane donated her private land and a significant amount of money to this project, therefore her name has been preserved as the park’s title. Vērmanes Garden Park grand opening to the public took place on June 8, 1817. In the beginning, the garden was 0.8 hectares and the territory included a rosary, stage, and many exotic and rare plants.
This exhibition will be open until August 31st.
