On the second day of the Riga City Festival, August 19, Riga residents and guests are invited to visit a wide variety of events in Riga’s gardens and parks in both the city centre and the suburbs to enjoy food from the best restaurants, participate in sports activities, watch street circus performances with children, shop in fairs and go to the main event of the celebration – “Stories of Daugavmala Park” at 11. novembra krastmala and watch the celebratory fireworks at the end of the evening
On Saturday, the morning will start with a workout for everyone “Riga Wakes Up to Celebrate”, which will take place in Lucavsala and to which is invited everyone who likes an active lifestyle, including children and adults who are enthusiastic about working out. Right there in Lucavsala everyone will have a chance to test their sports skills by participating in the “Daugava Open Water Swimming Cup” or by competing in the Novuss Tournament for Amateurs. People who like something more extreme are welcome to participate in the “The Great xRace Riga Adventure 2017”. On this day fans of basketball will also start a competition by fighting for victory in the traditional “Battle of the Riverbanks”, which this year will take place by the Riga Congress Hall; rugby players as well will demonstrate their strength at the International Beach Rugby Tournament at Ķīpsala Beach. Spectators and fans are welcome at the aviation gathering “Riga Fly in 2017” in Aerodrome Spilve, as well as at the Latvian “Match Race” championship and the Riga Sailing Cup competition, which will take place in Daugava Aquatorium between Akmens Bridge and Vanšu Bridge. On Saturday will continue the beach volleyball competition, as well as the floorball tournament.
An extensive programme of events will come about in Vērmanes Garden Park, where everyone is welcome to create flower arrangements as part of the event “Flowers for Vērmane”, participate in the chess tournament, visit Bread and Book Street, watch foreign artists’ performances and enjoy the performances of popular musicians, soloists, musical and vocal groups.
On the second day of celebration children are particularly welcome at many events. Those who are excited by circus performances will be welcome at Vērmanes Garden Park, at Jāņa Rozentāla Square at the event “Traveling Imagination City” as well as at Dome Square, where the “V.O.S.A. Theatre” artists from Riga’s friendship city Prague will have prepared a special performance. Educational programmes for children will have been prepared in Riga Dome Cathedral and Dome Church Garden, as well as in the Uzvaras Park at the event “Latvian Horses Then and Now”.
The central location of the celebration, as has become habitual, will be 11.novembra krastmala, where the event “Stories of Daugavmala Park” will take place with the parade of maintenance technology for the gardens and parks, velo-trial performances, motorcycle drag racing and a chess tournament. Everyone interested will be able to watch the florists’ show and see something out of the ordinary for the season – the creation of an ice sculpture. Before the Grand Concert “Daugavmala Park Ball” visitors will be able to watch the parade of lights to get in a festive mood and afterwards enjoy the concert programme. In the concert will perform soloists Ance Krauze, Normunds Rutulis, Viktors Lapčenoks, Riga Chamber Choir “Ave Sol”, instrumental group under the leadership of Kristaps Krievkalns, Riga Festival Orchestra, male vocal ensemble “Harmonija Rīgai”, a dance group under the leadership of Rolands Meržejevskis, Latvian hip-hop artist Edavārdi, group “The Sound Poets” and conductor Romāns Vanags. The Grand Concert will conclude at 23.00 with celebratory fireworks.
